Bordentown was settled in 1682 by Quaker Thomas Farnsworth as Farnsworth's Landing before being renamed for Joseph Borden, whose 1740 stagecoach-and-boat line made it a bustling stop between New York and Philadelphia, and later home to Thomas Paine and Clara Barton's first free public school in 1852.
